    Customers at "Reyn's" got to meet Dietrich Varez at Ala Moana on Saturday. Varez is a long-time follower of Father Damien, inspired by the future saint's selfless dedication. He says he was overwhelmed by Saturday's turnout.

    Long a follower and admirer of Father Damien, Big Island artist, Dietrich Varez, has worked with local island apparel manufacturer, Reyn Spooner, to create the third in a series of shirts that honor the Belgian-born Sacred Hearts priest who died caring for Hansen's disease patients on Molokai over a century ago.

    His most recent work of the "Canonization of Damien" has Hawaiian angels holding a maile leaf halo over the head of the priest. It is done in the artist's signature style, a monochrome brown print with detailed Hawaiian plants significant to the Damien story.
